Dual Language in the Primary School at ISL
Dual Language Programme
The International School of Lausanne (ISL) has introduced a new dual language programme for students in Years 4 and 5. This bilingual model will be rolled out to Year 3 and Year 6 for next academic year 2022-2023 and then gradually throughout the school. Dual language programmes foster bilingualism, biliteracy, enhanced awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and high levels of academic achievement through instruction in two languages.
Approach to learning
Our Primary School follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum framework that is both rigorous and engaging. Students in the Dual Language Programme have two classroom teachers, speaking English and French. The teachers follow a co-teaching model, meaning they share responsibility for the academic material.
We strive to recognise the unique potential of each student, and to equip them to play an active and responsible role in a complex, changing world with sincere care for individuals. We believe in strong values, the courage to think independently, and cooperation across cultural boundaries–ideas that form the heart of a progressive approach to learning.
A day at school
Students in Years 2 to 6 start their school day at 08:25 and finish at 15:40. Students in our Dual Language classes have two days of classes taught in French and three days in English per week.
We strongly believe in multiculturalism and its positive impact on our students. At ISL your child will integrate into a community of more than 75 nationalities. Ethical and pedagogical choices have been thoroughly discussed for the Dual Language programme, therefore we focus on celebrating diversity through special events such as International Day and Week of the Francophonie.
A place to call home
We want all of our students to feel confident. This leads us to provide students with a variety of support including, learning support, English as an additional language support and well-being support. Additionally, we ensure the constant presence of a nurse in our school infirmary.
A bus service is available for morning and afternoon transportation for our students. Additionally, students can choose to either bring a packed lunch or use our cafeteria service which provides hot meals. Lastly, in order to facilitate your daily lives we also provide an After School Care Programme for students in the Primary School.
